Back before just about everything ever recorded was available on your phone or streaming services, we had to go to the video store for our home movie watching needs. Back then, mom and pop stores would have to buy the tapes they would rent. Studios would send out catalogs and brochures to these stores so they could pick and choose what videos they want in their store. What we have right here is one of those brochures advertising the movie with “No Ring. No Ref. No Rules.” No Holds Barred!
Instead of advertising things like, oh, I don’t know, “Dookie!” and “Tiny wieners!”, this brochure is giving us a suave, debonair Hulk (Rip) Hogan. Has Hollywood changed the Hulkster?
Well, like the pamphlet says, “No Way!” That, of course, would come later. For just $89.95(!), your video store could have this wrestling blockbuster. Not enough for you? How about a No Holds Barred Sock-O P.O.P.? That will surely bring the kiddies into the store begging to find out why their hero was called a “jockass” by a TV executive right before he’s electrocuted to death.
No Holds Barred was a strange, strange movie that I, uh, definitely didn’t see in theaters when I was a child.
