Hulk Hogan A True Champion book front

Crapper Brian writes:

While looking up information about the Disney Adventures Magazine with Hulk Hogan, I stumbled upon this little gem. I’m not 100% if this was just for Hogan because one of the listings has Big Boss Man, Ultimate Warrior, Mr. Perfect, Barbarian, and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan

Hulk Hogan A True Champion book back

It’s a picture book titled “A True Champion (An Adventure with Hulk Hogan)” officially licensed book by WWF.

Here’s two separate listings on ebay:

Listing 1: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-WWF-True-Champion-An-Adventure-with-Hulk-Hogan-Picture-Book-Great-Shape-/171300489309?pt=US_Solo_Sports_Fan_Shop&hash=item27e24e085d

Hogan’s ego was so big that not only was he the main picture, but he also was in the background leaving the ring? Maybe he left the ring, to come back later in the night to beat the champion for the belt again?

Listing 2: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-1991-WWF-Hulk-Hogan-A-TRUE-CHAMPION-Hardbound-Book-Rare-Illustrated-Gass-/261441403687?pt=US_Childrens_Books&hash=item3cdf1f3b27

Something I found creepy, is that on the picture that shows some of the text from the book it says “He gave Jon’s shoulders a quick massage” Never have I had my personal trainer give me a massage.

Hulk Hogan A True Champion book excerpt

Plus Old Hulky’s picture next to it, looks like he had one too many of his vitamins and it’s trying to flush out.

I think you’ve just about said it all, Brian (and you managed to be a lot funnier than I could be doing so!).

What a strange book!

Still; as a kid who loved both wrestling and reading, I’d have been all over this like white on rice, and at least it encouraged kids to read, so I guess it’s not all bad.

  1. The Doctor of Style says:

Wow, Barbarian on the cover…Art Deco lettering…and Hogan in a surreal prelude to the double Doink angle. This is a real find!

  2. Jay "The Brain" Mann says:

Who did the paintings? For some reason I like the “goofy but still kinda sorta realistic almost” look.

Also, now I really want the “A True Champion – Bobby “The Brain” Heenan” book, if anyone ever bought it.

  3. Rusty Brookes says:

Just as opponents weren’t allowed to mention Hogan’s bald spot, it seems illustrators of kids books weren’t allowed to draw it either

I still have this book from Christmas 1991. It’s a personalized storybook. The story goes you (your name is in the book) won an essay contest and earned a week of work out sessions with Hulk. However during one session Hogan gets a call saying his and I am quoting the book here “granny needs his help” and has to leave town. What he doesn’t know is Mr. Perfect was in the gym and heard the whole thing so he tells Bobby Heenan who forms a plan to hire a Hulk look a like that and again quoting the book here “walked talked even smelled like him.” (??????) The plan was to have the Hulk Look alike drop the belt to the Barbarian. So when the “Hulk” comes back to the gym early you notice he is acting weird. Then later at an autograph divining you notice the “Hulk” tells the kids to back off. You decide to find him after the session to find out he goes to Brain’s office and overhear them plan for Hulk to lose to the Barbarian. So you go home to throw away your Hulk merchandise and see the autograph you got earlier that day was different from another poster he autographed in the past. So you figure out the guy is a fake and you need to contact The real Hogan. The way to do it? You go to a Warrior vs Perfect fight and hold a sign that says Hulk Hogan HELP. Hogan sees it goes home and you fill him in on the fake. Then Hogan shows up to the match and has the Big Boss Man arrest Heenan Barbarian and the Fake.

As RD would say….. “A fascinating tomb.”
