No joke, it’s been five days as I am writing this since the Bucks had their “no longer EVPs” collapse on Dynamite and and I STILL laughing about it. I don’t know the last time something in wrestling designed to be funny has made me still guffawing days later, so well played. And since I have a nightmare week ahead of me, why not leave me the funniest intentional comedy you can recall in wrestling in the comments section? I’d appreciate it. Onto the mailbag!
Aaron P kicks us off with…”Real American Freestyle Wrestling: What do you think it will end up being? Another legitimate contender like AEW, sticking around but mostly under the radar like TNA/Impact! Wrestling, doomed to failure by bungled management like WCW, or some other outcome? Let’s hear your thoughts.”
I think it will be lesser than any of those mentioned. Other than random tiny bits of news here and there (like Kurt Angle now being involved I guess?) it seems there is literally no buzz about it whatsoever. It’s weird because as much as you may not like Bischoff and Hogan, they generally can get at least get some hype going for their projects. This seems like something where folks threw money at them and they went to the bank, deposited the check, then hoped no one would ever mention it again.
Lucas B ponders…”Best match from a bad wrestler?”
I saw someone mention Ultimate Warrior with Randy Savage, but I would argue that his better matches were with Rick Rude. Those two just had really good chemistry, even better than with Macho. And make no mistake about it, Warrior was a legendarily terrible wrestler.
Dustin N follows up with…”Who is the best tag team to never win a tag title, and why is it the Faces of Fear?”
I was always shocked that the Rockers never had an actual run with the WWF tag belts. If the company isn’t counting their run, I ain’t going to either. I also thought the Rougeaus would have been fun heel tag team champs – they love the USA you know!!
Ryan G ponies up to the gimmick table with…”What are your thoughts on the team name of Kyle Fletcher and Takeshita… called “Protoshita”… and what merchandise should AEW come up with for said “Protoshita”?”
I dunno, but I see that and despite them being two incredible wrestlers I immediately think toilet paper for some reason.
Arya W asks…”Do you follow independent wrestling at all and is there anyone out there right now that you think may become a big star one day?”
I don’t really, no. Just no time with 87,000 hours of big league stuff on TV these days.
Cyndi S wants to know…”Has there been any thought on another side project like “The Joker’s Moustache” that you would attempt to do? I figure you would be perfect for doing one on Christmas movies.”
A Christmas movie podcast would actually be a lot of fun as there are so many terrible ones out there. I’ve also pondered a behind the scenes at Rupert’s Arcade, but that would be even more work for something I pour way too much time into already. It’s funny, I thought when RD Jr. left for college I’d have more time on my hands but I never seem to catch my breath!
SPEAKING OF RD JR, Meagan asks…”How was rd Jr’s first year of college btw”
He did great! There was an adjustment period of course but he poured himself into his studies and wound up doing well. He’s already looking forward to getting back to school and continuing his education which is really cool.
Jeremy W goes old school…”We all know managers had signature items/weapons. Jimmy Hart had the megaphone, Mr Fuji had the cane, Jim Cornette had the tennis racket, Paul E Dangerously had the portable phone which in those days resembled a brick etc. If you were a big time manager, what would be your signature item/weapon? I could see you with a comedically oversized arcade joystick, for obvious reasons.”
I had a giant poster of Uncle Burt I brought out for one of my first appearances, so I’d frame that and smash it over their heads while the ref had his back turned. LICENSE TO PRINT MONEY.
Robert R asks…”When is the Monday Night War DVD going to be inducted?”
You know, I’ve never considered that but it is WAY overdue. Added to the list. I could write three angry paragraphs alone about “viewers were confused but intrigued” as to why people were watching when Hall and Nash jumped ship. Someone should ask Eric on his podcast how many of the 83 week victories he’d attribute to VIEWER CONFUSION.
Ryan T wraps us up with where we first started via…”Scott D’Amore recently said that The Young Bucks might benefit from a jump to WWE. Assuming that happens (and CM Punk plays nice), do you think they’d end up doing well, or would they get lost in the shuffle like the Motor City Machine Guns already seem to be?”
It’s funny as I would be shocked if they don’t go to WWE at some point. That said, I can’t see them getting the freedom to do whatever crazy stuff they seemingly love to do (see the intro to this column). My guess is they’d get the usual treatment all AEW exiles get – rocket push to the top to the start, decent run, then start to fade into the background. They’d also make zillions in the process. OH! And all those WWE fans that hated them and said they have no psychology in their matches would suddenly realize they DO actually have psychology in their matches. Second verse, same as the first as they say.
And with that, I bid you adieu…keep those questions coming in rightchere!!
