Overrated and Underrated Tag Teams, Best Soda, and the World’s Strongest Man Competition from 1977!

World's Strongest Men 1977

Hope the unofficial start of summer (well, at least in the northern hemisphere) is serving y’all well. It’s actually my most hated season, but to each their own. Is there some place I could live that is forever fall? That’s my dream. Anyway, I have been doing some cleaning and data rearranging and I unearthed a few things (some from WrestleCrap past, some stuff never mentioned on the site) that should make for some laughs in the nearish future. Until then, let’s open up the trusty mailbag and see what y’all have to say…

Dustin N kicks us off with…”Who do you think are the most overrated and underrated tag teams of all time?”

Overrated seems to be easier for me, as New Age Outlaws immediately jump to mind. They had an entrance and catchphrase everyone loved, but I cannot think of one actual match I’d ponder rewatching. Underrated is tough, because most of the folks I consider to be the all time greats (British Bulldogs) most others do as well. A copout underrated answer would be the Young Bucks, simply because so many people despise them for reasons as a wrestling fan I cannot even fathom. Current day I’d say underrated would be Lucha Bros, and it’s a shame WWE seems to have no plans for Rey Fenix as he’s fantastic, especially paired with Penta.

SPEAKING OF TAG TEAMS, my friend Derrick G ponders..”You are transported back to an alternate 1987 after WrestleMania III. You find yourself on the WWF Creative Team. You are tasked with belting up the brand new WWF Intercontinental Tag Team Champions.

Strike Force and The Hart Foundation will shortly be feuding for the World Tag Titles as in the actual timeline and are not available. Demolition will be pushed to the tag title win at WM IV as in the original timeline and are also not available. Among the teams available:The Conquistadors

Billy Jack Haynes & Ken Patera
The Bolsheviks
The Islanders
The Dream Team II
The Killer Bees
The Young Stallions
The British Bulldogs
The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers

Who do you put the straps on and who do you book for the first title change?

Geez, I should have just looked at this list for the first question. I’ll go with the Bulldogs and Rougeaus, with the latter for sure being heels. After the Bulldogs win that feud, turn the Stallions also and have them be self-absorbed pretty boys. Our lives would all be better watching Dynamite Kid pummel Paul Roma to a pulp for weeks on end.

Ryan S wants to know…”Ever watch the 1977 World’s Strongest Man competition featuring such greats as Bruce Wilhelm, Ken Patera, Lou Ferringo, & Franco Culumbo?”

Believe it or not, I probably watched that live when it first aired. We need more tug of wars featuring behemoths in old west towns. Look it up, kids! who knows, maybe I can stretch the rules around here a bit and induct it, it does feature Ken Patera after all.

Robert R asks…”What’s your favorite all time soda?”

I’ve tried a million and I always go back to Coca-Cola Classic.

Josh G inquires…”Was there ever an independent wrestler that you became a fan of because of the Apter mags, excited you when they finally signed with the WWF and then disappointed you with the lousy push they received?”

Probably Butch Reed, as I was unfamiliar with his work. I would say he was washed up by the time Vince got him, but he went back to WCW and was great with Ron Simmons as Doom. DOOM! Please add them to the underrated list as well!

Steve A wants to know…”How much does this guy weigh?”

You’d need to ask Art that, it’s his gimmick not mine!

Adam W ponders…”What’s your favorite host segment on MST3K?”

Too many to name, but Mike showing up as Torgo to deliver pizza always cheers me up on a bad day.

Arya W heads down the aisle with…”Favorite wrestling wedding”

Said it before, I’ll say it again – nothing can top the Laurel Van Ness wedding in TNA!

Mike M wants to know…”I heard you enjoyed watching the Indy 500 live on tv last weekend! What’s the fastest you’ve ever been driving a car?”

Yes, believe it or not even though I’ve lived in Indiana my whole life I’ve never watched (or been to) the Indy 500. I’ve been to the Speedway countless times for work, but live, no no. And it’s historically been blacked out here so no chance to watch it live on TV! I was hanging out at home and saw it was going to be televised and watched the whole thing start to finish this year and it was a blast. You’d think I’d pay more attention to it since I absolutely LOVE arcade racing games – we had the Rupert 500 arcade racing tourney the day before in fact. As for the fastest I’ve ever driven a car…MANY years ago when I had a 1967 Mustang with a 302 in it, I know I pushed it over 100 MPH. Pretty sure I did that in my trusty Pontiac Fiero (!!!!) as well. Loved both of those cars.

Jarvis G wraps us up with…”Back in the early 1990s at the arcade, what was your preference; Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter? I always thought that Mortal Kombat was the cooler game, but felt that Street Fighter was the better one.”

Playing I easily prefer SF to MK. However, if I’m just watching, I like MK more than SF. I love the mythology of the MK series, and the backgrounds of MK2 are top notch. Can’t go wrong either way though – love them both!

And that wraps us up for another mailbag. Stay tuned for more and keep sending in those questions rightchere!
