Someone Bought This: WCW’s Raven t-shirt will make you look ignorant

 WCW Raven Shirt Front

Again from the WCW Worldwide blog, here’s a Raven t-shirt. The front is fine. Nothing too interesting there…

But let’s take a look at the back of the shirt:

WCW Raven Shirt Back

So what’s the problem?

The line in Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven” is:

Quoth the Raven “Nevermore”.

Plus, they forgot to put the quotation marks around “Nevermore”.

It would have taken whoever designed this shirt minimal effort to find a book of Mr. Poe’s poetry and stories to make sure they got it right.

Instead, they sold the shirt like this assuming that the stupid wrestling audience wouldn’t catch the mistake or know the substantial difference between “Quote” and “Quoth”.

So, this shirt manages to be insulting to both wrestling fans, and the legacy of Edgar Allan Poe.

Way to go, WCW!

In fact, it’s insulting to Raven as well. The back of the shirt is saying NOT to quote him

  2. kahuna says:

Raven actually always said quote instead of quoth.

  3. The Scanian Maniac says:

Given that even national anthems are copyrighted nowadays, can’t IP-laws have something to do with it?

    • Jason says:

Actually it isn’t. Poe’s works are public domain since he had died almost 150 years before this shirt came out. Standard copyrights extend 50 years after writer’s death. This was likely them being too lazy to get it correct and hoping no one would notice.

    • Cenamark says:

Poe’s work is part of the public domain. I figure Raven wanted to use that bit from The Raven, but didn’t want to use the Ole English. Raven is a genius who reads a ton. I’m sure he wasn’t just fudging it up out of ignorance.

      • Anonymous says:

“Raven is a genius” is the most factually inaccurate statement ever made about a wrestler. This is the same guy who turned Tammy Sytch into a literal locker room prostitute in exchange for drugs.

        • Cenamark says:

I said he’s a genius, not a saint. He’s a member of Mensa and has an IQ of 143.

          • Anonymous says:

There are pornstars who are members of Mensa. GTFO with that. That just means he can do spacial math well.

        • Guardian says:

And you’re saying someone who can manipulate someone into that ISN’T smart? Intelligence isn’t determined by your moral compass.

          • Anonymous says:

            >using “moral compass” non-ironically

It’s also not determined by your liberal arts rhetoric.

          • Anonymous says:

And yes, I am saying that requires no intelligence whatsoever. Do you seriously believe pimps are smart? Do you even have any concept of what that word means or are you just making up new definitions as you go along?

  4. Matt Soileau says:

They misquoted the quote on the quote shirt…

  5. VDM says:

Shirt & Wrestler are technically 100% Correct.

Raven is quoting the raven. He is not quoting the book ‘The Raven’ by Edgar Allen Poe.

  6. ChrisV says:

Technically, the Poe writing in question is a poem, not a book.
I just wanted to get in on the fun!

I owned the Billy Kidmann Raven’s Flock WCW T-shirt, with the ankh on the front and “I feel your pain.” on the back. It was the only wrestling T-shirt I ever bought.
