It Came From YouTube: The Gobbledy Gooker’s debut is met with silence

This is of course The Gobbledy Gooker’s infamous debut (after months of hype) at Survivor Series 1990.

Obviously R.D inducted this years and years ago, and he’s the namesake for our Gooker award, but you really need to hear just how dead the crowd is throughout the entire ordeal. You can almost hear the disappointed “Aw! That’s it?” from the entire audience.

It’s fascinating.

I feel really bad for Roddy Piper and Gorilla Monsoon who have to try and sell this as A). Being great, and B). Trying to convince us that the crowd just loves The Gooker and his wacky antics.

They were given an impossible task, the poor guys…

Mean Gene looks like he wishes he were anywhere else except in front of that egg when it hatched.

Can you blame him?

Amazingly, this was not the last we would see of The Gobbledy Gooker in 1990…

  1. VDM says:

The exact same thing happens every week on RAW.

Cole: “Oh it’s the Funkasaurus! BROODUS Clay! Everybody get down! The kids just love this guy!”
    Audience: …. ……
Lawler: “This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen in my life! Except for Sonic Burgers!”

  2. Autrach Sejanoz says:

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting a “This video is not available.” message?

    • "The Big Cheese" Paul Kraft says:

I just checked and it plays okay for me. Are you outside the U.S? Maybe it was blocked in your country? Try it again later.

      • Autrach Sejanoz says:

That channel normally is blocked here in Australia, but it normally says “The uploader has not made this video available in your country.”

Pretty stupid, if you ask me. I mean, where do they think we are, NARNIA?

  3. Mike B says:

The Playmate of the Month line was a super bad idea. Never conjecture something that is far, far better: the fans would have loved that, which makes the Gooker even more disappointing.

    • "The Big Cheese" Paul Kraft says:

Excellent point! That line always bugged me, too. I wonder if Gene ad-libbed that or if he was told to say that stuff?

  4. Sean Bateman says:

Gooker 3:16 says “Weclome to Wrestlecrap!!!!”

  5. TK says:

Want scarier? Yes the WWE has a Twitter account for the Gooker now…and one particular ominous message about something coming from the Gooker Monday.

  6. Peter says:

That kid’s expression at the 3:13 mark when he’s clapping is priceless. His whole childhood was ruined from this experience, and now he probably has a blog ripping into WWE on a weekly basis.

  7. Rose Harmon says:

The link doesn’t work for me, either.

  8. Kev says:

Say what you want about the Gooker. Yes, it was ridiculously stupid and one of the worst things ever but it’s a testament to Vince McMahon’s promotional genius that he could get people to pay their hard earned money to see what was in a goddamn egg.

    • "The Big Cheese" Paul Kraft says:

I don’t know if that says so much about how Vince is a genius, or how people are rubes… Probably a bit of both. 🙂

  9. MWeyer says:

I did love on one of those “Legends of Wrestling” roundtables on “Worst gimmicks,” Okerlund point blank asks Patterson “who the HELL thought this up?!” and Patterson fires back “Vince McMahon, of course.”

Okerlund is obviously embarrassed talking about it but fun how they note the plan was for Undertaker to be in the egg.

    • West Texas Redneck says:

I’m guessing that was the original plan, but then at the last minute they realized how stupid it would be for the WWF’s new badness to make his debut by hatching from a fricken egg. But they couldn’t just pretend the egg never happened, so they came up with the Turkey Man.

  10. John C says:

Vince should have been eggcecuted for that idea.

  11. Mister Forth says:

They were all marked out from Taker.
