This is “Tell Me A Lie”- the syrupy, overwrought dramatic ballad WWE produced for Shawn Michaels in 1995 because he was going to have to “retire”.
Here’s some trivia for you- the song is sung by Fonda Feingold (and despite the song being a sappy pile of goo, she does quite a nice job singing it I must say).
Imagine how much sappier this would have been if Shawn Michaels was a face at the time.
And while my memory of that time isn’t the best but wasn’t everyone they showed Shawn wrestle working for WCW at that time?
It was late 1995 I think. He still was a face. All those dudes were still with the WWF, it was pre-NWO.
You know Vince must have written the lyrics for this and probably kept singing it to the life size HBK cardboard (or rubber) figure in his office. This must have come out in ’96 it just doesn’t fit in the ’98 Attitude Era no matter how much Vince had a chub for his boytoy.
This is indeed from 1996 and Shawn’s “lost smile” retirement. Not his 1998 actual retirement, version 1.
Close, this video was in late 1995 when he suffered that concussion from Owen Hart.
He didn’t make the “Lost Smile” speech until February 1997
The thought of vince silently weeping to himself while this plays makes me laugh uncontrollably
This actually predates the lost smile. It was a very realistic, for the time, worked injury angle where the announcers went silent and Vince rushed to the ting to check on Shawn. This of course was before Owen Hart’s death. As a matter of fact Owen was Shawn’s opponent during the match where it all started. This really was a huge piece of the build to Shawn being ready to be THE guy at Wrestlemania 12.
What a fitting title for this, and many instances in his career to come…
As much as I love this sad song, I can never find out WHEN exactly it was released! Can anyone tell me when this song was released? Anyone can answer this one… thank you.
It’s from 1995 when Owen knocked Shawn out and he was possibly going to have to “retire”. 🙂
