Well all know Tazz as the street tough “Human Suplex Machine” from ECW or the perpetually bored announcer from TNA but not that many people have seen Taz’s original gimmick the Tazmaniac: a facepainted caveman in a neon orange Tarzan costume!

While Tazmaniac stay in USWA would make his way up to ECW (which was at the time NWA: Easter Championship Wrestling) and the rest was history. Also on the WWE Network there’s an episode of very early ECW television where you can see the Tazmaniac in all of his glory in a wild hardcore brawl in Sabu, while still doing this gimmick.

All i can say is “Wow!”.

This just goes to show that talent can exceed beyond the restraints of a crappy or strange gimmick like this one.

I know that typos happen, and I’m not hating, I’m just picturing what NWA: Easter Championship Wrestling would be like. All those eggs everywhere.

I don’t know, the promotion seems like its dead but it seems to rise every third show.

I remember an article in an Apter mag in the early 90s where they were actually trying to sell the idea that the guy was from Hunter Island, off the coast of Tasmania, itself an island part of Australia, itself sometimes considered “the world’s largest island”. (It’s actually a land mass, but whatever.) Also, they said that he used his skills at suplexing to defend himself and his territory. Yeah, they actually portrayed him as a savage, like Kamala or Saba Simba. Unbelieveable, man. I’m so glad I now know that pretty much everything in the PWI family of mags back then was totally fabricated and completely untrue. That’s a real relief for me!

The early Tommy Dreamer in ECW, wrestling in dorky suspenders, is also funny to watch 🙂

  4. Trench Reynolds says:

I remember when he wrestled in IWCCW and when there was a Tazmaniac II in the early days of ECW.

    • David Turrigiano says:

That was his cousin as Tazmaniac II. Chris Chetti’s older brother, I think his name is Jack.

Man, poor Tony Williams must be a dadgum midget. He stood pretty much eye to eye with ol’ Orange Pete there.
