It Came From YouTube: Lex Luger “I’ll Be Your Hero” music video

John Mellencamp, eat your heart out!

In 1993 the WWF inexplicably turned Lex Luger from a Narcissist to an All American by having him body slam Yokozuna on the U.S.S Intrepid ship, put him on a Coach bus, and trotted him around the good ol’ U.S.A in an attempt to get him over and make him Hulk Hogan 2.0.

It didn’t really work and nobody bought Lex Luger as much of a “hero”. Possibly because he had all of the personality and charisma of an empty toilet paper roll.

With lame, sappy songs like this promoting him, it’s not hard to understand why fans never took to him and he was never given a World Title run at the time. He needed some kind of rousing, cheerful song like.. well… “Real American” behind him to make up for his lack of character and charisma.

P.S: If you really like the song for some reason, it’s on the WWE Anthology CD set which is out of print but readily available New and Used on Amazon Marketplace. The set has a ton of great theme songs and other songs on it.

Did any of you actually get to meet Lex on his “Lex Express” tour? When and where did you meet him? Any cool stories to share? Comment below!

This song makes Air Supply sound like The Sex Pistols

I had this on a fan club cassette back in the day. Honestly, I didn’t think it was a bad gimmick at the time. It was a bit like Diesel though, he had no one to feud with. Anyone remember Ludvig Borga (RIP)? I think that sums up why this never went anywhere. Not to mention Tatanka’s heel turn which made no sense (yes, I know that was after his huge push, just bringing it up as a point of how they had to create people for him to feud with).

That anthology sucks. There’s hardly any classic 80’s themes on there.

I do wish they would’ve released a 3 or 4 disc set of just 80’s themes. There are so many excellent ones.

This was so bad I mean how could you buy this guy as a humble face when he’s flexing with the I’m so better than you grin. And the awful Vince interviews with him.
“I’ll be your zerooooooooo….when you need someone to put on a resthold!!!!!!!!!!!! Time for a chinlock!!!!!!!

    What….did I just watch.

But, the Lex Express was a little before my time, I missed it by a year. Reminds me a lot of John Cena though, with his Marine stuff and the muscleman who only has kids cheering for him.

I suffered through the entire “Lex Express” era. The one thing that struck me was that after “Sumnerslam”, when Lex beat Yokozuna by a friggin’ countout, and the faces were in the ring acting as if Lex had won the belt, I couldn’t help but think that Lex was the biggest joke in wrestling at that point.

100% correct that was such a crap non-finish and what a shock in the Royal Rumble a few months later Luger was in another awful non-finish with the tie.

      • Raven7309 says:

The interesting thing about the Rumble is that Vince had booked it so that both Lex and Bret Hart would be the co-winners. When the decision was announced after the match, he gauged the audience’s reaction to see who got the bigger pop. When Bret got the larger crowd reaction than Lex, Vince decided to have Bret go over Yokozuna at Wrestlemania 10.
