This is a great find. I haven’t seen a collect call commercial in so long that it’s quite depressing because it reminds me of how old I am now.

Those commercials were all over TV throughout the 90’s and even into the first half of the 2000’s then just vanished altogether at around 2005. The 900 lines were pretty huge too.

People who complain about smartphone contracts nowadays probably have no idea how much money diehard wrestling fans like myself spent trying to get “hot news” and “exclusive scoops” from the WCW, WWF, ECW, PWI and Dave Meltzer hotlines. That 1-900 craze was so out of control that even Jerry Lawler and the great movie critic Joe Bob Briggs had their own 1-900 numbers.

Does anybody here have any memories they would like to share about the 1-800-COLLECT, 10-10-220, 1-900 craze?

What’s funny is that most of those 10-10 numbers are still active but with the cheap (or nonexistent) long distant charges, I don’t think anyone really uses them anymore.

So in around 1999 (when I’m guessing that this craze was at its peak), who thought it was a good idea to pair Alf with the Hulkster? I mean it makes sense I guess, both are 80s icons.

I now remember the 1-800-Collect ad where Austin was pissed at D’Lo for not using it.

Stone Cold and DLO 1800 Collect:

So thats what they talk about in the ring..hmmmmmmmm

  5. Sean Bateman says:

Why in the hell is ALF slumming with a hasbin?

  6. E-Squared says:

I hope someone submits the singing contest commercial with these two. It was funny.

I love the simpsons reference, great post.

Forget Mariah Carey, Nikki Minaj, and whomever else; I think we just found the new judges for the next season of American Idol. License To Get Big Ratings!

I also remember the collect call commercials with David Arquette, and 1-800-Collect with Alyssa Milano as Ava Savealot. I think right before the collect call craze died out, there were 1-800-Collect commercials with Stephanie McMahon and Carrot Top. There was one where he was giving her a massage! No joke. I think it was a “definition” on this site back in the day. Maybe RD could bring back the photo “definitions”.
