“I know! Let’s have a character who’s a wacky, fun-loving, goofy Monk! And we’ll make him mute so he has to draw things like a smiley face on a pad of paper! That is sure to connect with the kids!” -Nobody in their right mind.
Poor Mike Shaw went from this, to a gimmick that’s somehow even worse- Bastion Booger.
poor Mike indeed
Poor Mike Shaw. I think Vince was running off the idea Michael McShane’s Friar Tuck from “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”, but to be honest that’s too recent of a reference for him at the time.
Well that’s about all there is to say about that. So here’s something Crappers might not know. THat monk hair cut actually meant something. It was called a tonsure – it designated someone as a clergyman. During the middle ages, students attending university were actually given the legal equivalent status as clergymen, so every college student had this same hair cut as poor Mr. Shaw is wearing here.
Yeah that’s just about as interesting as this match.
Hey, that’s really interesting! Thanks for sharing that information. And they say WrestleCrap isn’t educational? 🙂
Mike Shaw was nasty. I wouldn’t want to be in a ring with him.
From everything I’ve heard Mike Shaw was a very nice guy that everybody liked. Just because Bastion Booger was a nasty character doesn’t mean that Mike Shaw himself was gross. Remember that just like every other wrestler, he took all these stupid gimmicks because he was trying to put food on his family’s table.
It’s a shame we only got to see him in this match. The shimmy in a friars robe is much less repulsive than in an outfit seemingly made from old car seatbelts. I would have loved to seen how the friar would take on adversaries like Evil Doink or Damien DeMento.
What are the fans chanting? (pardon the pun)
Cant believe he didnt make the cut for 2k14
god, its like wwf saw trucker norm and thought ” hey, we can do worse”. and they did, twice. now that’s true talent
Wow…..
Who’d have thought that sitting on someone’s face would be a finisher.
Maybe in the Divas division?
OK. I’m going to catch some flack for this, but I kind of liked this gimmick. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s the way I enjoyed my HIGH school years coming back to haunt me. I don’t know. But I have a soft spot for this one. Considering this was the tail end of Jameson and Bushwacker era, No worse then what the future would hold. From Boogeyman, Mantaur, The Beverly Bros to Great Khali, naked Mideon and Jeremy Piven. Before we pick on poor Friar, remember there’s so much more crap to save our internet venom for.
Hey, now. Boogeyman was awesome.
How about this dream team, Firebreaker Chip & Friar Ferguson…CHIPMUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s hard to imagine a gimmick worse than Bastion Booger, but this was definitely it. WCW parading him around as Norman (the Lunatic), and then Trucker Norm, seemed like gold level gimmicks by comparison. Neither company gave him anything that allowed decent workrate, either. I’ve only seen small samples of his Stampede stuff, but the man could go when not playing a goofy, over-the-top, stupid gimmick.
How bad can this really be? We have lived through moments that we couldn’t block out with years of therapy and/or drugs. Between the Ding Dongs, Chucky from Childs Play, Christmas Creatures and Hillbilly Jim relatives, how in the wide world of sports this considered that bad? Lmao it’s not even 5 minutes of crap and no I dunno why I’m so adamant about this.
Friar at least made me smile, unlike.. well, any of the examples you gave, yes. 🙂
I had completely forgotten about Friar Ferguson until I saw his induction on Wrestlecrap years ago. It was one of those “OH MY GOD!” moments. Brought back a lot of memories watching WWF as a little kid.
