One of the most memorable promos of all time for all the wrong reasons.
WCW United States Champion Bret Hart picks who he wants to wrestle him for a title shot.
“Who are you to doubt El Dandy?” indeed.
I’ve never heard someone refer to another person as a “Jam-up guy” before but I like that! I’ll have to start using it.
I just wonder what possessed Bret to give this odd promo and reference El Dandy like this? It’s so out of left-field. Even Mean Gene calls him out on the absurdity of it.
As far as I know, Bret and El Dandy never ended up wrestling each other (please correct me in the Comments section if I’m wrong).
Bret always referred to WCW as “The WCW” which always annoyed me and made no grammatical sense whatsoever. I guess it was a holdover from all the times he’d say “The WWF”.
Ahh El Dandy…one half of the greatest tag team in WCW history: Los Fabulousos with “Don’t Be Fooled By His Stocky Physique” Silver King!
Hey, somebody had to stand up for the mid-carders. God knows WCW didn’t.
Indeed they didn’t! All NWO, All Hogan, All Bischoff (and later Russo) every single time.
I assume Bret didn’t mention it in his autobiography? It’s a shame that it didn’t actually lead anywhere considering how it would have hopefully lead to some of the Cruiserweights ending up being elevated.
“How about Hipnosis”, “Psicosis?”, “Whatever”.
Bret liked to call Summerslam “the Summerslam”
You mean SummerFest right?
One of my all time favorite WCW promos!! My friend and I always joke about how great El Dandy was because of this promo! LOVE IT!! This is second only to Jericho going to Washington DC to find the WCW rule book!!
Don’t forget the man of 1004 holds….
ARMBAR!
You just can’t get any cooler than this. El Dandy in all of his grandeur:

I believe the context was that he was champion, but dodging all legitimate contenders. That’s where the absurdity of it came into play. I’ll bet he just picked the first name that came to mind and rolled with it. Had to use somebody from a lower division in order to do the “obviously dodging while still sounding arrogant” thing. (To answer Mr. Big Cheese’s question).
I loved this promo, it’s hilarious and great all at the same time.
