It Came From YouTube: A German comedian on a German WCW Pay-Per-View!

Crapper Cameron Archer writes:

Tom Gerhardt is a German comedian. These two videos document his feud
with Berlyn, which culminates in a match at WCW’s Millennium Tour in
Oberhausen on February 12, 2000 (

Gerhardt travels to Starrcade 1999 at Washington, DC’s MCI Center, in
order to initiate a feud with Berlyn. Gerhardt steals the tailpipe from
Berlyn’s car – a reference to Gerhardt’s 1994 film Voll normaaal, which
later spun off into the long-running sitcom Hausmeister Krause – Ordnung
muss sein. Cue “hilarious” training montage.

Surprisingly, the Gerhardt/Berlyn match doesn’t end up with Gerhardt
winning a title, or Berlyn losing the match. You’re not going to make
Alex Wright a heel in Germany, even with that rivethead gimmick.

Schtick in any language is unfunny and annoying. I’m shocked WCW wouldn’t sign him for 3-4 years at 2 million a year. Perfect fit for the company, not entertaining and would take up segments better used for more talented people.

Tom Gerhardt, huh? Interesting. They couldn’t get Harald Schimidt? (He had a show based in Cologne, and Conan O’Brien went over to visit him once.) Anyway, I sometimes wish that WCW hadn’t done what they did with Alex Wright. He was on your list of “Signs Of Definitive Proof That WCW May Have Been Run By Nazis”, after all, along with his annoying translator and giant bodyguard. In any case, I wasn’t following wrestling when Berlyn debuted, and the gimmick really didnt get over in the long run. That I am aware of!

    I’ll just leave this here:

“If you thought Starrcade was bad in English, it was worse in German. The German crew was in Washington DC live. The regular commentators were joined by comedian Tom Gerhardt, who was popular in Germany ten years ago because he used to go on stage dressed as a giant penis and pretend to ejaculate on the audience. He was doing heel commentary to get himself over, calling Disco Inferno gay, talking about Madusa having nice tits, and stood when Benoit made the open challenge to anyone and challenged him. This was all done to build a match where Gerhardt will wrestle Berlyn in Oberhausan, Germany on the WCW house show. German wrestler Ulf Hermann, upon hearing this news, issued a grandstand challenge.” – The Wrestling Observer Newsletter: January 10, 2000.
