It Came From YouTube: See Andre The Giant battle Gorilla Monsoon- and not in a wrestling match

From September 23rd, 1977 at Roberto Clemente Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico it’s Andre The Giant fighting Gorilla Monsoon in a boxing match (?!).

In all fairness, the match is probably a lot more watchable than a wrestling match between the two would’ve been…

Lame. I understand Andre was a boxer in his younger days, but the punches didn’t look good. Maybe it was due to his size and mobility issues. Monsoon definitely looks like he never took a boxing class. I think a wrestling match with bear hugs, headbutts and lariats would have been better. The only thing I liked was Lord Alfred Hayes laughing at different points.

Wrestlers “boxing” is one of the worst ideas ever implemented in professional wrestling history. It just doesn’t work on any level. The only reason that Piper vs. Mr. T was even passable to even the slightest degree was that they could both actually box plus they had enough personality to make up for the stupid match type/concept to some extent at least.

  3. Falcone says:

This was actually on Andre’s DVD too. (And no, it’s not worth whatever you pay for it.)

  4. "The Big Cheese" Paul Kraft says:

The only way this match would have been better is if Andre made the Glass Joe taunt sound from Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!

“They were literally hanging from the rafters.”
“Sorry Gorilla but you were outside.” – Vince
“I nailed him in the external occipital protuberance.”
    “Clever maneuver.” – Vince

If only this had been a tuxedo match or a judo jacket match then it would have been ‘minus five stars.” Those shows in Puerto Rico were brutal for the storms that would hit. Anyone else see on Classics the show from 1985 when the last few matches all ended with the same small package because the ring was so wet.

Thank goodness this wasn’t under “Brawl For All” rules.

I believe this was also on the Top 50 Superstars DVD. For me, I prefer Mike Adamle over Alfred hayes after seeing this atrocity. As for the match… its understandable why they booked this, especially with the Monsoon-Ali confrontation happening around the same time (i think. Correct me if im wrong)

    Laughing gas.

    That is all.

Where can I get a copy of a supply of laughing gas?
