It Came From YouTube: “Mama’s Family” wrestling episode “Mama Mania”

(Yes I know YouTube pulled these videos. Sorry, I can’t do anything about that).

Crappers; I have a confession to make and I’m not exactly proud to tell you this…

I… kinda like the sitcom Mama’s Family with Vicki Lawrence. Especially the later syndicated episodes which were a lot chewier than the earlier NBC seasons.

Yes; it was stupid. Yes, it had silly plots. No, the humor wasn’t exactly cutting edge or thought-provoking.

All the sets looked like some kind of shoddy, cheap High School play. The characters wore the same outfits all the time like cartoon characters do.

It was a simple, goofy little sitcom that probably lasted a lot longer than it should have.

Just to clarify, this particular “Mama” did not smash punch bowls onto the ground and have random crying jags while screaming “Damn! Damn! DAMN!”.

Just in case there was any confusion.

Anyways, the episode above is “Mama Mania” which first aired on November 21st, 1987.

Yes, a wrestling themed episode (there sure seem to be a lot of those in sitcoms, don’t there?).

I’m just going to steal the episode description from Wikipedia which says:

Didi, an old friend of Naomi’s and a professional wrestler, talks Naomi into being her tag-team partner for a match. When Mama accidentally knocks Didi out just before the match, Naomi and Mama have to wrestle against Didi’s opponents.

It’s not the funniest episode of the series or anything, and the plot is so nonsensical it will make your head spin, but it is kind of fun, and it has a lot of dumb Pro Wrestling cliches that we always get in these sitcoms with wrestling plot lines.

Oh; and apparently in the world of “Mama’s Family”, wrestling is all a shoot (!).

Mama is hardcore!

There’s a closed down restaurant near me called “Mama’s Family Restaurant”, I think about Mama’s Family every time I pass by it.

*shamefully admits he was all about Mama’s Family when he eleven/twelve thanks to Fox 53’s ten o’clock back to back airings*

  3. The Doctor of Style says:

What does it say about US pop culture that “sitcoms with wrestling plot lines” is a subcategory of its own?

It’s A Miscarriage Of Justice that Trish Stratus got in the H.O.F before MAMA HARPER!!!!

I loved Mama’s Family, too. No shame.

Hang on – I’m from the Isle of Man which is in the British Isles so I am not too familiar with US TV but was it some kind of rule that every sitcom needed to have a wrestling themed episode?

    • "The Big Cheese" Paul Kraft says:

Yes, it’s a law in the U.S. :) They must all also have a game show episode of some sort.

      • Thomas Moffatt says:

I see… and the other law is the nosey neighbour if I recall from the Small Wonder induction featuring Jesse the Body?

Might have to do a Wrestlecrap guide to sitcoms article…

  7. Sean Bateman says:

Years later, Mama Harper used her handbag of doom on Hulk Hogan and Big Show on two seperate weeks of the last incarnation of Hollywood Squares. SO when is Mama Harper gonna be inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame?
