It Came From YouTube: Dusty Rhodes calls out Tony Schiavone on his foolishness

Crapper Sean Bateman sent this in and writes:

Bobby Heenan doing what he does best on commentary. But, Dusty gets his two cents in

This is a rare case where I think Dusty managed to be a whole lot funnier than Bobby.

When I first heard this clip, I laughed so hard I nearly choked on the Peanut M&Ms I was snacking on.

Well done Dusty; and thanks for sending this in, Sean!

  1. Brian says:

This was the greatest video in the history of our sport!

  2. THE Jeffry Mason says:

I don’t care how much hate I get for this, but I will go ahead and vouch for Tony as the greatest play by play guy in the wrestling business. He was born with a voice for broadcasting, and knew what he was talking about. If all wrestling calls were simplified down to just “kicks” and “body slams” the product would be almost unwatchable(not that it isnt bad now) Schiavone brought a sense of a legitimate sports contest and big match feel to every match, even the undercard, and he could joke around with the color guy(s) as well. Sorry for ranting, now would you please put down the pitchforks?

    • Anonymous says:

Tony Schiavone’s authenticity isn’t a coincidence: He’s actually a legit (minor league) baseball announcer.

And I agree that the guy is definitely underrated. His “realistic” style is actually entirely serviceable.

  3. "The Big Cheese" Paul Kraft says:

Tony used to be pretty good before he just got lazy and stopped giving a crap.

  4. TMS says:

During Tony’s short WWF run, did he ever call a match alongside Gorilla Monsoon? THAT would be an interesting commentary team.

  5. Frank says:

But….but that’s what the move was called. That’s just Dusty Rhodes being an ancient moron back in the 90s, and he sure as shit ain’t gotten any better.

    • Rick says:

Theres another example around that time when Tenay calls a Dragon screw leg whip and Dusty and Heenan crack jokes on it all night. Its really annoying, like knowledge is something to be ridiculed.

  6. Sean says:

Imagine if Micheal Cole got the same treatment done by JBL and Lawler

    • Frank says:

Funnily enough, that’s EXACTLY what happened with Matt Striker whenever he was on a show with Lawler and Cole. He would call a move by its actual name, or he would dare to use facts, and they would literally stop calling the match just to shit on him.

  7. Autrach Sejanoz says:

    SANE Dusty Commentary!

  8. John says:

“Tony make more sense and talk about doin’ some clubberin’ with the plundahh cause that sounds better.” Would Dusty have liked instead of the “bionic elbow” they said, “Tubby bitch dropped flabby arm on the other guy.”

  9. Walt says:

I agree that Tony was good. Yes, he got lazy at the end, but with all the crap he saw from Hogan and ATM Eric, I can’t blame him. I enjoyed Tony’s play by play in the late 80′s and early 90′s.

As for that fat moron who once teamed with a guy in a gorilla suit giving Tony a hard time asking where did the names come from? As far as I know, Chono called that move the Yakuza kick. The Yakuza is the Japanese mafia. As for the German Suplex, in Greco Roman Wrestling it is called the Suplay. It was called the German Suplex in Pro Wrestling because Karl Gotch used it as his finish and it was named in homage to him.

If Dusty didn’t spend so much time dancing with Sapphire, travellin to the darkest reaches of the jungles of Africa to find tag partners and gettin funky like a monkey, he would have realized that.

  10. Big wiggle says:

Even if the dream was wrong, i think everyone can agree it makes for one awesome video

  11. Brandon says:

This was during Starrcade 95. On this PPV or the year after, Dusty and Bobby rip Tony for calling a dragon screw leg whip. Kept making jokes about getting snacks with a side of leg whip.

  12. Addison says:

And the funny thing is, the Torture Rack is pretty similar to the Argentine Backbreaker…
