It Came From YouTube: Abe “Knuckleball” Schwartz blames YOU for the 1994 baseball strike

In 1994 baseball was on strike.

So, they dressed Steve Lombardi up like Mr. Met and sent him out there with a baseball mascot gimmick (?) to blame the fans for the strike.

Shockingly, this did not get him over as a heel.

And in no way did this feel like Vince had any personal gripe with the government as soon as the term municipal tax payers’ money came out. Abe seemed like such a legit player since we all know how baseball players paint their face for a game. Couldn’t just use a little eye-black no, better just do the whole face so there’s no subtlety to it.

    Ugh.

  3. John Q Occupier says:

Please tell me his finisher wasn’t a baseball slide to the outside and that he won all his matches by count-out?

  4. patricko says:

I don’t think he had a finisher. I actually don’t recall that he ever wrestled as this character, at least not on TV.

    I’m frequently wrong, however.

    • John says:

His finisher was when the strike ended the next year and the character was as useful as giving tv time to any one-note gimmick like this.

  5. Addison says:

I think his finish was a superplex.

  6. patricko says:

Nailz always won by countout too, didn’t he? I always thought this was a sign of a subpar / technically weak wrestler.
“geezus, they don’t even have a real finisher.”

And in the case of the berzerker and nailz, I guess I’d be right.

  7. Hashington says:

Another one of Vince’s poorly thought out attempts to capitalize on irrelevant current events.

  8. Sean Bateman says:

Guess that the Brawler was busy that day…

We was right about the first part.

  10. dadan the Crapper says:

I dunno but I think I totally agree with this logic. Wrestling fans were definitely the reason Baseball was on strike back then. Then were the cause of everything wrong.

  11. Art0Donnell says:

Abe had shown up the year before on Raw in the Intercontinental battle royal after Shawn Michaels’s first annual title forfeiture. Back then, he was known as “The MVP.”

Here’s a bit of commentary from that night:
Vince McMahon: “Who is the MVP?”
Bobby Heenan: “He’s the guy in the baseball uniform!”

  12. Mike Hunt says:

What a retarded kid I was to not know that was the Brooklyn Brawler.

  13. Mr Maddog says:

    “It’s the Furies!”
